How to Choose your Type of Skoolie

Flat nose, dog nose, short, full size, shuttle, charter bus, trolley....

So you’ve decided to take the plunge and convert a school bus into your very own mobile paradise. First of all, welcome to the Skoolie life! It’s a unique and adventurous way to see the world on your terms. But before you can hit the road, you’ve got a big decision to make: what type of Skoolie is right for you?

From the classic full-size school bus to the quirky trolley buses, there’s no shortage of options when it comes to picking out your perfect ride. It might seem overwhelming, but don't worry, we’ve got you covered. Let’s break it down and figure out which Skoolie fits your vibe.

Flat Nose vs. Dog Nose: What’s the Deal?

This is probably the first thing you’ll notice when looking at buses. The difference comes down to the shape of the front of the bus.

  • Flat Nose: These buses have a straight front with the engine compartment tucked underneath the bus. They’re more compact and typically easier to maneuver. If you’re looking for a more streamlined look or if you’re planning to park in tight spots, a flat nose could be a great option. These are the classic "short bus" look, but don’t let that fool you. They can still pack a punch in terms of space inside!

  • Dog Nose: These are the ones with the iconic sloped front, kind of like the nose of a dog (hence the name!). The engine is located in the front of the bus, and the cabin space starts right behind it. Dog nose buses offer more overall length inside, but they’re a bit more challenging to drive and park because of their longer nose. Still, they have a cool vintage charm and give you that classic Skoolie feel.

Short Bus: Big Dream in a Small Package

Let’s say you’re a minimalist at heart, or maybe you just don’t need a ton of space. A short bus could be the perfect option for you. These buses are usually around 20-25 feet long, which makes them a lot easier to drive and park than their larger counterparts. You’ll still get a nice amount of living space to work with, especially if you’re good at optimizing your layout.

Who’s it for?

  • Solo travelers or couples

  • Those who want a smaller, easier-to-drive Skoolie

  • Anyone looking to save on gas and parking

Full Size Bus: All the Space You Need (and Then Some)

Full-size Skoolies are usually around 35 feet long, and they provide a lot of room to work with. Think of all the possibilities! You can go full-on tiny house with a big kitchen, living room, and even a dedicated bathroom. If you’ve got a family, or if you just like the idea of having all the space you can possibly need, a full-size bus might be your best bet. This is the one we chose!

Who’s it for?

  • Families or people who want lots of space

  • Those who want a luxury Skoolie experience

  • Anyone planning to travel with a bunch of gear or pets (Can't leave behind miss Melbourne our lovely pup)

Shuttle Bus: The Middle Ground

A shuttle bus sits somewhere between the short and full-size options, typically around 25-30 feet long. They offer a good amount of space without being as bulky as a full-size school bus, and they’re still more manageable than a giant charter bus. Shuttle buses are often easier to find at a lower price point, and they have a bit more character to them.

Who’s it for?

  • Folks who want more room but don’t need a full-size bus

  • People who want a more unique look compared to the traditional school bus

Charter Bus: The Big Dreamer

Charter buses are the kings of Skoolies. These bad boys can be 40-45 feet long, and they offer tons of space. They have a higher ceiling and wider layout, which can make them feel more like a home on wheels than just a bus. But, with the added space comes added cost, fuel consumption, and difficulty in driving and parking. It’s a great option if you’ve got big plans, though—especially if you want to go all out with your Skoolie conversion.

Who’s it for?

  • People who want to travel in comfort with a lot of space

  • Those who want to do major renovations and make it a home

  • Anyone who plans on bringing a big crew or running a Skoolie business

Trolley Bus: A Fun, Retro Option

If you’re looking for something a little more unique, a trolley bus might be your ticket to Skoolie heaven. These buses have a fun, nostalgic look and are usually a bit smaller, but still offer plenty of space for a cozy conversion. They’re typically around 25-30 feet, but the interior often has a distinct layout that can give your Skoolie a truly vintage vibe.

Who’s it for?

  • People who want something different from the typical Skoolie

  • Those who love retro or vintage aesthetics

  • Anyone who’s looking for a quirky, fun design

In the End, It’s About Your Needs and Dreams

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to choosing your Skoolie. The best type for you depends on your lifestyle, budget, and how much space you need. A short bus might be perfect for solo adventures, while a full-size or charter bus might be ideal for a larger family or a mobile business. Whatever you choose, remember that the beauty of Skoolie life is in the journey and making your space truly your own.

Good luck finding your perfect Skoolie—maybe we’ll see you out on the road! 🚐✨
