Balancing Remote Work and Full-Time Travel in a Skoolie

Updated: Mar 13

One of the biggest questions we get about living in our skoolie is: “How do you both work remotely without driving each other crazy?

The short answer? Intentional space, flexibility, and knowing when to step outside.

Designing a Work-Friendly Skoolie

When we built our bus, we knew remote work would be a priority. That meant creating a space where we could both take calls, focus, and not feel like we were constantly in each other’s way. Our skoolie is divided into three main sections:

  1. The front living room & kitchen – Great for casual work, coffee breaks, and planning sessions.

  2. The middle bedroom – A quiet escape when one of us needs deep focus.

  3. The back office & bathroom – Our dedicated workspace with a desk setup and a door for meetings that require cameras on.

Having these separate areas allows us to shift where we work depending on what we need that day. If one of us is on a call in the back, the other can set up in the front or even take work outside.

Changing Up the Workspace

One of the best things about living in a skoolie is that our “office” isn’t just inside the bus. We love to:

  • Work outside whenever the weather allows—coffee on the fold-out table, laptop in a hammock, or sitting on the steps.

  • Move between spaces inside—sometimes it’s nice to switch from the desk to the couch or even sit on the bed with a laptop stand.

  • Find local spots—if we need a different environment for the day, coffee shops, libraries, parks, and co-working spaces give us a change of scenery.

Making Remote Work… Work

Working and traveling full-time requires a few key habits to keep everything running smoothly:

  • Reliable internet – We use a combination of Starlink and mobile hotspots to stay connected no matter where we are.

  • Headphones – Noise-canceling headphones are a lifesaver when we both have meetings at the same time.

  • Schedules & boundaries – We loosely plan our workdays so we’re not interrupting each other too much. If one of us needs quiet time, we communicate that ahead of time.

  • Embracing the unpredictable – Sometimes, the best office is a picnic table in the woods or a scenic overlook. We’ve learned to roll with it and make the most of wherever we are.

The Best of Both Worlds

Balancing work and full-time travel takes some adjustment, but for us, it’s the best of both worlds. We get to wake up in new places, explore when we’re off the clock, and still get our work done.

If you’re thinking about working remotely while traveling, our biggest tip? Create a flexible workspace, have a solid internet plan, and be open to changing things up.
